The Green Man - Restoring Earth Balance

What is our place within the natural world? Can we humans recreate our relationship with nature, with the cycles of seasons, and the green and growing things? The Green man speaks to us of this – his foliate face beaming with charity towards those who live in harmony with trees and plants.

(Some foliate faces are not so pleasant, I must admit – perhaps they are angry at our transgressions into their space - tearing down the forests, altering the ageless cycles of growth with human created global warming)

We may have not lost our way entirely in this modern age of concrete and indoor entertainment, but certainly – the Green man reminds us to make time for quiet spaces of the outdoors – the mountains with their grand tracts of forest, the meadows with flowers and grasses, each with its own rhythm of time and cycle of quickening seed, germination of shoot, growth to fullness, flowering, fruiting, and then slow return to rest and waiting for a new cycle to begin. How amazing is this sense of patience, this willingness to be fully a part of a natural cycle! One place to spend Green man time is in your own garden, watching your food transform from seed to harvest….

The Green Man is the connection to the deep ancient wisdom of the Earth. The essence of the Green Man is the cycle of death and rebirth -- continual renewal of all in the living universe.

He is the son of the Goddess, and represents Aliveness! The Green Man has many faces, and has been known as Osiris, Dionysus, Dumuzi, etc. to our ancestors. He is the pollinator, male seed, the garden and forest god, consistently benevolent. He is often shown with leaves and vines sprouting from his mouth, as his language is the living vegetation itself.

Variations of his foliate face have appeared all over the world. Even now, images such as these appear on churches and cathedrals throughout Europe.

The Green Man archetype is the primal nature of all men and women who yearn to live in harmony with Nature and the Earth. He teaches us the lessons of nurturing and sharing. May we regenerate and grow – learn to collaborate with the rest of this planetary life, letting nature flow around us as we share the space with other beongs.

The Burning Man 2007 art theme is about the Green Man - he is becoming an archtype for our age!!! This is a part of what they have to say:

Beginning with the advent of the modern age, we have regarded nature as a beast that we can tame. We have built levees to contain the rush of rivers and rebuff the ocean's swell; we have extracted oil from the earth to fuel the engines of our cars. We have constructed dams equipped with turbines that project electric power in a skein across the globe — our cities are cocooned in artificial light that rivals and occludes the stars. It's very easy to presume we hold the upper hand. Yet levees break, and glaciers melt. The power of the tide when roused comes up to meet us with a challenge and a message that we can't ignore.

From Co-Op America

Each of the following could reduce carbon emissions by at least 1 billion tons per year by 2054:

Here’s our 12-step plan:

1. Increase fuel economy for the world’s 2 billion cars from an average of 30 mpg to 60 mpg.

2. Cut back on driving. Decrease car travel for 2 billion 30-mpg cars from 10,000 to 5,000 miles per year, through increased use of mass transit, telecommuting, and walking and biking.

3. Increase energy efficiency by one-quarter in existing buildings and appliances. Move to zero-emissions plans for new buildings.

4. Decrease tropical deforestation to zero, and double the rate of new tree plantings.

5. Stop soil erosion and encourage local, organic agriculture: Apply "conservation tillage" techniques to cropland at 10 times the current usage. Choose local, organic food and diets with less meat.

6. Increase wind power. Add 3 million 1-megawatt windmills, 75 times the current capacity.

7. Push hard for solar power. Add 3,000 gig watt peak solar photovoltaic units, 1,000 times current capacity.

8. Increase efficiency of coal plants from an average of 32 percent efficiency to 60 percent, and shut down plants that don’t meet the standard. No net new coal plants; for new plants built, an equal number should close.

9. Replace 1,400 gig watts of coal with natural gas, a four-fold increase in natural gas usage over current levels — a short-term step until zero-emissions renewable technologies can replace natural gas.

10. Sequester carbon dioxide at existing coal plants. Sequestration involves storing carbon dioxide underground, an unproven technology that may, nonetheless, be better than nothing.

11. Develop zero-emissions vehicles, including plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles powered by renewable energy.

12. Develop biomass as a short-term replacement for fossil fuel until better carbon-free technologies are developed — but only biofuels made from waste, and made without displacing farmland and rainforests.

This framework can help us think big and fast enough to avoid the worst consequences of climate change. If we are to achieve each wedge by 2054, the next 10 years must see major action. Anything less and we’re kidding ourselves.

The good news? We can do this. We have the technologies and the know-how. We can take many of these steps today, on our own. For the rest, we need to persuade our elected officials, contact our power companies and auto manufacturers, and demand action from those with decision-making power. The best news? Beating climate change opens the door to more jobs, energy security, progress against poverty, a cleaner environment, and a safer world — a better future for all of us.
